CIPLE (Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira) is the A2-level Portuguese exam run by CAPLE at the University of Lisbon. People sit it for three main reasons.
Portuguese law asks for proof of basic Portuguese for a permanent residence permit and for long-term resident status. An A2 certificate such as CIPLE is one of the ways applicants commonly evidence it.
Since 19 May 2026 the nationality law requires proof, by test or certificate, of sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language and of Portuguese culture, history and national symbols — alongside years of legal residence and other cumulative conditions. CAPLE describes CIPLE (A2) as the minimum language level.
A recognised certificate for an employer or a course, or simply a clear target: A2 means you can handle everyday situations in Portuguese — shops, health centre, landlord, neighbours.

One overall percentage. 55 % passes. Suficiente 55–69 %, Bom 70–84 %, Muito Bom 85–100 %. CAPLE publishes no minimum per paper.

17 October 2026 (Portugal only, registration until 5 October) and 5 November 2026 (Portugal and abroad, registration until 20 October). CIPLE runs in the international sessions of May, July and November plus extra Portugal-only dates. 2027 dates had not been published when we checked.
In Portugal sessions: reading and writing at 09:00 (1 h 15), listening at 10:30 (30 min); international sessions run in the afternoon; the speaking part is scheduled by your centre. Bring the ID you registered with; phones and dictionaries are not allowed; written answers in blue or black pen.
